uni·verse noun \ˈyü-nə-ˌvərs\ : the whole body of things and phenomena observed or postulated.

It’s amazing that something so unimaginably enormous can be summed up in so few words. It seems to me that the above definition is an incredibly human one. Humans, as a species, are obsessed with categorizing, with explaining, with organizing. Ever since the first man laid with the first woman and looked, for the first time, at the heavens, we humans have been striving to understand just what the universe is. It seems that we have thought about it and what it encompasses enough to come up with a simple definition. But have we ever considered the possibility of foul-mouthed, pop culture-obsessed, alien robots? No? Well, Sounds On F$%&in’ Fire have. And they just made a 17-minute music video about it.

Stereo Solar Systems is, well, profoundly unexplainable. The video is a 17-minute montage of trippy space visuals and serene earth landscapes. The accompanying music sounds a bit like Stephen Hawking would after snorting a few lines of cocaine from the liposuction scars of an ugly stripper’s stomach. It sounds like a far-off race of aliens, whose only knowledge of Earthian culture comes from MTV’s Jersey Shore and TED’s talks on theoretical physics, trying to communicate with us. It sounds completely and utterly foreign, and I just don’t know what to make of it.

After listening to the two minutes of SSS, my brain was focused on one thought and one thought only: “WHY THE F$%&?” I wasn’t able to shake this soul-consuming question until around four minutes in. By this point, I was done searching for a reason — it was an exercise in futility. By minute ten my ears were getting in my brain’s face and saying, “Seriously dude, turn this off. I’m not screwing around here. I will mess you up.” By minute fifteen, my entire thought process had changed. I had a moment of Buddhist tranquility. I was blank. Without questions, without answers. The end of the video produced in me a militaristic sort of shell shock; my ears were ringing and my vision was blurry. This lasted for only a few brief moments, but it felt like an eternity.

I strongly encourage you readers to listen to Stereo Solar Systems, for as long as you can. Not because it’s good (it’s balls s$%& terrible, in my opinion), but because it is so mind blowingly different. If you hang around music lovers long enough, you’ll come to realize that there is an audience for just about everything. The crazy DJ’s from Sydney, Australia who are Sounds On F$%&in’ Fire are searching for an audience, and I sincerely hope they find one.
